Split View is a Chrome extension that arranges open tabs side by side. This page describes exactly what data the extension touches and what leaves your device. Short version: nothing leaves your device.
What the extension does with your data
Split View runs entirely on your computer. It does not send any data to us, to Google, or to any third party. There is no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporter, no remote configuration, and no advertising network.
The extension reads and stores the following data locally in your browser, and only for the purposes described:
| Data | Where it lives | Why it's needed |
|---|---|---|
| Titles, URLs, and favicons of your open tabs | In memory while the popup is open | To list tabs in the picker so you can choose which one to put next to the current tab. |
| Last selected ratio and orientation | chrome.storage.local |
So the popup opens with the layout you used last time. |
| Saved layouts (a name, the geometry of each pane, and the URL of the active tab in each pane) | chrome.storage.local |
So you can recall a named arrangement with one click. |
| Active-split record (which window IDs are part of the current split, plus pane geometry) | chrome.storage.session |
So the close, swap, exit, and undo actions know which windows are linked. Cleared when Chrome quits. |
| Recent tab IDs and an undo stack of the last few window arrangements | chrome.storage.session |
So lightning split can target the previously active tab and so Ctrl+Shift+Z can restore the previous state. Cleared when Chrome quits. |
| Monitor work-area dimensions | In memory only | To size the resulting windows so they fit the visible part of the screen (taskbar / dock excluded). |
chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.session are Chrome-managed storage scoped to this extension. Other extensions and websites cannot read them.
What the extension does not do
- It does not transmit your tab list, browsing history, URLs, page contents, or any identifier off your device.
- It does not contain any code that is fetched from a remote server. All JavaScript that runs is shipped inside the extension package and reviewed by Chrome before installation.
- It does not read the contents of pages you visit. The mini-toolbar and undo toast that the extension injects into split-participating tabs are small UI overlays that render their own content; they do not read the surrounding page.
- It does not access cookies, passwords, autofill data, browsing history, bookmarks, or downloads.
- It does not share data with Google, Anthropic, the extension author, or any third party.
- It does not track you across sessions or devices.
Permissions, explained in plain terms
Each permission listed in the extension's manifest is used for one narrow purpose. The extension does not use a permission for anything beyond the purpose stated here.
tabs— to list your open tabs (title, URL, favicon) inside the picker so you can choose a target for the split, and to move tabs between windows when you split, swap, close, or exit. Tab metadata is read at the moment the popup opens and is not stored.activeTab— to inject a small UI overlay (toast banner, undo prompt) into the tab you are currently using when the extension performs an action you triggered. Activated only by your click or your keyboard shortcut.scripting— the API used to perform the overlay injection described above. The extension only injects its own UI; it does not inject scripts that read or modify the page you are viewing.tabGroups— to keep tab groups intact when a tab is moved between windows during a split. Without this permission, moving a grouped tab would silently strip it from its group.system.display— to ask Chrome for the dimensions of your monitor's work area (the visible region after the taskbar or dock is subtracted) so the resulting windows fit the screen. Display geometry only; no identifying information.storage— to save your last selected ratio and orientation, and any layouts you choose to save. Stored locally as described in the table above.
The extension does not request host_permissions and therefore cannot read or modify any specific website.
Children
Split View is not directed at children under 13. It does not collect any personal data from any user, including children.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change what the extension does with data, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date at the top will change. Material changes will also be called out in the Chrome Web Store changelog for the release that introduces them.
